The construction of the third bridge over the Bosphorus in Istanbul is completed but the traffic on it will be opened only in August. This was stated by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who visited the new building, according to dpa.
The total cost of the bridge is estimated at three billion US dollars.
According to Turkish media, the suspension bridge of 1.4 kilometers in length will have 8 lanes highway and two rail tracks. It was built to the north of the two existing bridges connecting the European and Asian parts of the Turkish metropolis.
The new bridge is part of a larger project which also includes the construction of a new airport and a canal from the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea bypassing the Bosporus.
“Erdogan`s projects are excessive”,- critics say. Environmentalists also criticized the bridge project because, on their opinion, it has led to the destruction of forests to the north of Istanbul.
