A tourist from the United States has got a prison sentence after being found in his luggage a few kilograms of stones collected on the beach in Antalya. Jason Dement went to Turkey in his legal holiday. He liked the local nature so for memories he took a bag of beach pebbles, which decided to bring to his native Mississippi. However, during passing the customs control, he was arrested. Workers of the customs control alerted a large number of stones in his luggage, so they checked the bag.
Not only the beach pebbles have been founding in the package but also several fragments of ancient brick and hexagonal marble tiles. Customs officers have recognized these things as artifacts. After that, against Jason Dement was opened a criminal case.
The man claims that all these stones he found on the beach. Near the hotel there were no ancient ruins or sights. During Jason`s holiday he did not attend any excursions. The tourist had to hire a lawyer to help him avoid the term. The maximum penalty for smuggling antiquities in Turkey is 12 years in prison.
