Recently, during the subaerial excavations which were carried out next to Bademli, it is the province of Izmir, archaeologists discovered the island mentioned in ancient books, there was built the ancient city Cane. The geological protoplast dig out the refuse stone was taken near Bademli small peninsula Bademli, archaeologists discovered that the peninsula was an island in ancient time. It was found out that the channel between the island and the mainland for many centuries was filled by silt.
Rediscovered island is the third in a chain of Arginuss islands mentioned in ancient sources. For long time archaeologists, historians and geographers have discussed about island’s location.
Archaeologists from Cologne University with colleagues from the German Archaeological Institute and the participation of historians, geographers and geophysicists from Manisa, Cologne, Rostock and Southampton universities began archaeological excavations to find the location of Arginuss Islands, which, according to ancient books, were to be somewhere near Bademli .
Dr. Felix Pearson said: “Before the excavation we were not sure that this area was Arginuss islands which we tried to find. Investigating the geological protoplast, obtained by core drilling, we discovered that the channel between the third from Arginuss island and the mainland, was filled by loose soil and rocks, which formed the existing Peninsula.”
The architectural and ceramic artifacts were explored in depth, archaeologists discovered that the city Cane was actually located on this island.
