China, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Georgia implement a joint project – reappearance of the Great Silk Road – China and Europe will be connected by the “Silk Railway”. On 28th of November in Istanbul those countries signed the agreement for a consortium of national carriers.
The trains from China will come to Istanbul for 14-15 days, it is by 4 times faster and cheaper as shipping, which takes 40-45 days. China has invested in the project “Silk Railway” about 40 billion dollars. Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey made a contribution to build the necessary parts of the railway on own territory.
On 13th of December, 2015 the first train en route “Silk Railway” passed the way China-Tbilisi, through China, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. And then this train delivered goods from China to Turkey. Regular cargo rail traffic starts in 2016. The road goes through Turkey to Europe due to the rail underwater tunnel “Marmaray” under the Bosphorus, connecting the Asian and European side of Istanbul (the construction was completed in 2013, “Marmaray” is the deepest underwater rail tunnel in the world).
For reference: The Great Silk Road – a grand trade route, which was uniting China and the Mediterranean states since the II century bc until the XV century, it was the cause of foundation of many unique cities, historical monuments, traditions and even states. It became irrelevant as a result of an armed conflicts in Central Asia (including Tamerlane’s hikes), the development of marine trade.
